Poinsettias

A holiday favourite, poinsettias are among the most popular indoor plants of the Christmas season. With over 100 varieties available, they range from the classic vibrant red to unique variegated pinks and other festive colours. The striking “blooms” you see are actually bracts—modified leaves—while the true flowers are the small yellow centres, called cyathia. Their brilliant colours develop as the plants respond to shorter days and reduced light.

How We Grow

On August 6th we began the growing process with rooted cuttings purchased from a propagator. These plants are carefully grown for five months under controlled conditions. On October 1, we introduce blackout curtains to simulate shorter days, which triggers the colour change process. By late November, the plants are fully developed and ready for sale.

Growing Tips

Light: Place poinsettias in bright, indirect light.

Outdoors: They thrive with 4–6 hours of sunlight per day.

Temperature: Ideal range is 65–70°F. Always bring them indoors if frost is expected, as freezing temperatures will kill the plant.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but never waterlogged. Use a pot with good drainage and water thoroughly, allowing excess to drain away. Avoid letting pots sit in standing water, as constant wetness may cause root rot.

Are Poinsettias Toxic?
Despite common myths, poinsettias are not highly toxic to pets. However, if ingested in large amounts, the leaves or bracts may cause mild nausea or vomiting. For safety, it’s best to keep them out of reach of curious pets.
